Meal Pattern Minute: Reduced-Fat Milk
June 19, 2026
Milk requirements in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) change by age, which makes it important to know exactly which types are allowed at each age. If you’re considering serving reduced-fat (2%) milk, it’s helpful to understand when it is creditable, so your meals meet CACFP requirements and meals and snacks remain reimbursable.Â
In this Meal Pattern Minute, Isabel Ramos-Lebron, MS, RDN, LD, explains how reduced-fat milk fits into CACFP requirements.Â
Transcript: The answer is that it depends. Children who are one year old must be served unflavored whole milk. Unflavored reduced fat or 2% milk can be introduced once children are 2 years old or older. In addition, children who are 6 years or older may be served flavored, reduced-fat milk. Â
