Outdoor learning

Whether it’s a walk around the block, a moment in the park, or simply looking out the window, these activities from our partners at Sesame Street in Communities are easy to integrate into daily routines. Together, families and providers can help children notice, wonder, and grow—one outdoor moment at a time.

Look Up, Look Down (Storybook)

Share this storybook about outdoor learning with children and try the learning prompts as you go. Later, when you’re outdoors or just looking out the window, look up and look down… and help children try some of these ideas!

Counting Outdoors: Memory Match (Game)

Math is everywhere… including outdoors. As they observe the world around them, children often love to count things they see, whether it’s ladybugs on a tree trunk or birds in flight.

Help children play this memory matching game in which they try to match each number card with the group of plants or animals that represent that number.

A Walk Around the Block (Article)

From ants to city trees, every step outside is a chance to spark curiosity and learning. Discover how everyday moments can inspire big ideas in little minds in this article.

Focus & Observe (Article)

Turn cardboard tubes into a tool for wonder! Read this article for tips to inspire children to focus, observe, and explore the world around them—one cloud, beetle, or tree at a time.
