Summer is nearly here, and the school year is winding down. The temptation to swap class time for screen time is strong, but it’s not what children need most. That’s why our partners at Read Aloud 15 Minutes have created summer materials designed to spark creativity and encourage physical activity without relying on screens.

First, Read Aloud has created Connect-for-More, a movement-based twist on the classic Memory game. In this version, children match letters to movements and then act them out. Don’t just stay seated, get moving and challenge each other to come up with more movement words that start with the same letter sound!

Beyond the game, Read Aloud has created a package of supporting materials. First is their parent handout and poster, perfect for teachers, librarians, and caregivers to include in summer packs or post on the wall. Summer can be a struggle for parents, so these reminders offer the encouragement they need to keep children active and away from screens.

Next, Read Aloud has you covered from A to Z with their Alphabet Movement Calendar—in two versions!

  • The interactive online version uses the same prompts as Connect-for-More and works like an advent calendar. Each day reveals a new movement, explains its benefits, and offers a book recommendation—designed to keep learning and activity going even when out of the classroom.
  • Prefer something screen-free? Download the printable calendar and hang it on the fridge. Children can explore a new letter each day, just like a summer-long advent calendar.

As summer unfolds, let’s nurture a spirit of adventure and learning beyond the screen. From Connect-for-More to the Alphabet Movement Calendar, Read Aloud 15 Minutes' resources offer fun, active ways to build skills and make lasting memories. Make it a season of growth, movement, and reading aloud for at least 15 minutes every day!
