Meal Pattern Minute: Acorns

July 17, 2026

Nuts and seeds often come up in discussions as meat alternates but what about less common options like acorns? If you’ve ever wondered whether they can credit toward the meats/meat alternates component in the Child Adult Food Program (CACFP), you’re not alone. Understanding which foods are creditable helps ensure your meals meet USDA requirements, especially when exploring unique or traditional foods like acorns.

Get the scoop in this Meal Pattern Minute as Isabel Ramos-Lebron, MS, RDN, LD, provides guidance on acorns.

Transcript: The answer is no. Acorns do not credit as a meat alternate in the CACFP. While some nuts and seeds are creditable in the CACFP as a meat alternate, acorns do not credit due to their low protein content.

Staying up to date on crediting regulations ensures your meals are both compliant and nourishing. Explore the resources below and check back for more Meal Pattern Minute tips to support your program success!
