Meal Pattern Minute: Minimum Meal Pattern Serving Size
May 1, 2026
For Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) operators, small details can have a big impact on compliance. One of the most common questions we hear is about minimum serving sizes. What they are, when they apply and why they matter so much for reimbursement. Understanding this concept is essential for menu planning and meal service, but it’s not always as straightforward as it seems.
Listen to this Meal Pattern Minute as Isabel Ramos-Lebron, MS, RDN, LD, defines what minimum serving sizes are in relation to the meal pattern and what happens when this requirement is not met.
Transcript: The meal pattern minimum serving size is the required amount of each meal component that must be served for a meal or snack to be reimbursable in the CACFP. These minimums are set by USDA and vary by age group and meal type, such as breakfast, lunch, supper, or snack. If the full minimum serving size is not served for any of the required meal components, the meal does not meet CACFP requirements.
