Meal Pattern Minute: Milk Transition Period
August 23, 2026
Transitioning infants from infant formula or breastmilk to cow’s milk is an important milestone and one that often raises questions for (Child and Adult Care Food Program) CACFP operators. Programs want to ensure they are supporting infants’ nutritional needs while also staying compliant with CACFP meal pattern requirements. Understanding whether a transition period is allowed can help providers plan confidently during this stage. Â
Listen to this Meal Pattern Minute as Isabel Ramos‑Lebron, MS, RDN, LD, explains how the CACFP supports infants during the transition to whole milk and reminds operators of an important crediting option that applies to children of any age. Transcript provided below. Â
Is there a milk transition period for infants? Â
The answer is yes. For infants, iron fortified formula may be served to children between 12 and 13 months to help with the transition to unflavored whole milk. As a reminder, breastmilk may be served to children of any age and is creditable in the CACFP. Â
